B.A./B.S. in Health Studies

The Bachelor in Health Studies degrees provide students with the opportunity to customize a focus of study and to create a trajectory toward careers in the health field.  Within Health Studies we offer 4 concentration areas: Community Health Education, Health Sciences, School Health, and Aging Services.

Regardless of your Health Studies concentration, an internship experience is an important and required part of the curriculum. The School of Public Health supports all students in gaining practical and applied experience related to the work they are interested in pursuing.

Within Health Studies we offer four concentrations:

Community Health Education

  • This area of study is for students who want to pursue careers in community health promotion and disease prevention. It blends public health and related research with a range of strategies such as community organizing, behavior change, public education, and policy development to help create healthy environments. Health educators seek both to aid in the voluntary selection of healthy behavior patterns by individuals, and to encourage the development of environmental conditions that support good health.
  • Alumni have found opportunities with the following employers: state and county health agencies, Evolution Healthcare and Fitness, not for profits including Central City Concern, IRCO, Planned Parenthood, Outside In, and others.

Health Sciences

  • The health sciences concentration provides a bachelor degree option for students seeking admittance into professional programs such as: pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-dental hygiene, pre-medical laboratory science, pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-chiropractic medicine, pre-nursing, pre-naturopathic medicine, pre-optometry, pre-pharmacy, pre-physician assistant, lactation education, pre-radiation therapy, or an adviser approved option.
  • Alumni have gone on to pursue pre-professional health programs at the following schools: Linfield, OHSU, Pacific University, Concordia, George Fox, Bastyr, University of Western States, Northwest University of Natural Medicine, Creighton University, various State of New York University campuses, and more.
    In developing a plan of study, students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in health studies with a health sciences concentration should verify specific prerequisites required by any professional school(s) to which an application will be submitted.
  • Students majoring in health studies with a health sciences concentration should meet with OHSU-PSU School of Public Health advisors for advising on the health sciences portion of the major requirements, and with College of Liberal Arts and Sciences pre-health advisors regarding preparation for professional health programs (e.g. medical, dental, physical therapy, nursing, occupational therapy, dental hygiene, and more).

School Health Education

  • The school health education concentration is designed for students interested in teaching health education within a secondary (middle or high school) public or private school setting. It is advantageous to also consider adding the physical education content area in addition to health education. Upon completion of the bachelor’s degree, students are eligible to apply to the fifth-year Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP) or Secondary Dual Education Program (SDEP) in the Graduate School of Education at PSU.
  • After completion of GTEP or SDEP, students will be certified to teach in the state of Oregon and alumni have found employment in local area school districts.

Aging Services

  • The aging services concentration is designed for individuals who wish to develop or enhance a career related to aging services, including such services as senior health promotion and case management, and community- or institutionally-based long-term care.
  • Students who complete the coursework required for the concentration will possess a basic understanding of gerontology with particular skills in administration and finance, chronic disease, and health promotion. This program also will enhance the skills of students planning to enroll in industry-provided training to become administrators of assisted living and residential care facilities or nursing homes.
  • Alumni have found opportunities with the following areas of employment: hospice care, nursing homes, not for profits, and assisted living facilities.
