We aim to create an interdisciplinary and inclusive environment where critical examination of the human experience is the norm. SUMMARY:Measuring and Projecting Population Health: Child Mortality in the G7 Countries and U.S. Life-Course Obesity
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Omar Karlsson \nThe talk has two parts. The first examines subnational variation in mortality before age 20 years across the G7 countries. Using vital statistics and population data\, it constructs age-specific mortality rates for states\, provinces\, and comparable regions and examines geographic inequalities\, with particular attention to the United States. \nThe second part focuses on obesity in the United States. Projections of mortality\, disability\, and health-care needs\, as well as models of chronic disease\, require estimates of how obesity develops across age and differs between birth cohorts because life-course exposure shapes later-life health and disease. Most data on obesity come from repeated cross-sectional surveys\, which include new individuals in each round rather than following the same people as they age. The talk presents a method for simulating trajectories of body weight from these surveys. \nHosted by PSU Population Research Center
