DESCRIPTION:ASPPH\, in partnership with the Transforming Academia for Equity Coordinating Center\, Change Matrix\, is pleased to announce a new three-part webinar series designed to advance equity-centered change across academic public health. Transforming Academia for Equity: A Learning Journey is a free\, open-access professional development opportunity for students\, staff\, and faculty seeking practical strategies to strengthen equity\, institutional excellence\, and belonging. \nThis interactive series introduces the Leading Through Change Framework (LTCF)\, developed by Change Matrix and used by Transforming Academia for Equity grantee institutions to guide organizational transformation. Each 75-minute session will focus on a phase of the framework\, from creating conditions for change\, to engaging diverse voices\, to implementing and sustaining long-term efforts. Participants will gain a comprehensive and actionable roadmap for advancing equity within their institutions. \nAttendees will hear directly from grantee institutions\, including Drexel University\, UCLA\, the University of Memphis\, the University of Southern California\, and Oregon State University\, and will engage in structured activities to apply concepts in their own settings. Each session is designed to provide practical tools and clear next steps. \nThe series begins May 13 and continues June 10 and July 15\, with sessions held from 1:00 to 2:15 PM ET. DESCRIPTION:ASPPH’s IDEA Institute invites academic public health leaders\, faculty\, staff\, students\, and community partners to join Engaging Diverse Voices for Action on June 10 at 1:00 PM ET. The webinar is the second installment in the three-part Transforming Academia for Equity (TAE) series\, presented in partnership with Change Matrix\, LLC and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Building on the Leading Transformation for Change Framework\, the session will explore how inclusive engagement can help institutions advance meaningful and lasting organizational change. \nThe TAE initiative was created to foster meaningful dialogue between academic institutions and community organizations around dismantling systems of oppression in higher education and creating more equitable and inclusive public health learning environments. Following the first webinar\, Creating Conditions for Change\, this next session moves from preparation to participation by examining the principles and practices that support authentic stakeholder engagement. \nA central feature of the webinar will be a presentation from the University of Memphis School of Public Health\, where participants will learn how the institution has engaged students throughout its TAE journey. The discussion will provide a practical example of how institutions can center the voices of those most impacted by systemic inequities and incorporate those perspectives into decision-making and change efforts. \nThe webinar will also include a structured small-group dialogue activity designed to encourage reflection\, surface diverse perspectives\, and generate actionable ideas. Centered around a graph makeover\, the talk presents three real-world design principles that can clarify both data visualization and critical thinking. \nKate Miller is Director of the Visual Thinking and Data Visualization Program at the Quantitative Sciences Unit at Stanford Medical School\, as well as a Senior Biostatistician there. SUMMARY:Defend Public Health: Work\, Wellness\, and What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:Miranda Yaver breaks down CMS’s new Medicaid community engagement rule\, work requirements for people with disabilities\, medical frailty exclusions\, and what it all really means. \nPlease join us for our July General Assembly\, focused on the harms coming from proposed rules related to Medicaid work requirements. \nThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed its rule to carry out the Medicaid work requirements of HR1\, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act\,” but in doing so\, it set out a policy even more restrictive than what Congress required. Congress’s imposition of Medicaid work requirements is already a solution in search of a problem given that most Medicaid enrollees are working or would fall into an exemption category. But one of the challenges is determining who exactly falls within these exempt categories\, and who will remain subject to the documentation burdens or risk losing coverage. By defining “medical frailty” as constituting health conditions that prevent one from doing any sort of work\, as opposed to a serious or complex medical condition (as Congress had required)\, the Administration’s proposed rule is putting people with a wide range of illness at risk of losing their health coverage — and\, in turn\, necessary medical care — when their ability to work varies over time. This will lead to greater barriers to treating both chronic and infectious diseases\, and place greater strain on health systems. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

While many CHWs in Oregon are already trained in assisting communities with managing chronic illnesses or heart disease\, there is a gap in available content for cancer-specific topics. \nThis training — developed by a partnership between OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Pink Lemonade Project — will introduce an overview of cancer and then use breast cancer as an example of one specific cancer. Topics that will be covered include carcinogenesis\, risks\, prevention\, screening guidelines\, and post-diagnosis supports. The goal for having CHWs trained in cancer topics is to increase awareness of cancer prevention and screenings among communities that face cancer disparities such as those in rural areas\, Black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.
