SUMMARY:Pink Lemonade Project Trainings - OHSU General Cancer 101
DESCRIPTION:Community Health Workers (CHWs) and their similar counterparts such as Peer Navigators (PN)\, Traditional Health Workers (THWs) etc.\, play a critical role in breaking barriers for patients who experience challenges to accessing healthcare and providing culturally-competent health education. While many CHWs in Oregon are already trained in assisting communities with managing chronic illnesses or heart disease\, there is a gap in available content for cancer-specific topics. \nThis training — developed by a partnership between OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Pink Lemonade Project — will introduce an overview of cancer and then use breast cancer as an example of one specific cancer. Topics that will be covered include carcinogenesis\, risks\, prevention\, screening guidelines\, and post-diagnosis supports. The goal for having CHWs trained in cancer topics is to increase awareness of cancer prevention and screenings among communities that face cancer disparities such as those in rural areas\, Black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. The training will also provide some insight and resources into how CHWs can support cancer patients and survivors. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Virtual Roundtable: Building Critical AI Literacy in Teaching Public Health Education
DESCRIPTION:Using AI effectively requires more than knowing how to prompt it—it requires knowing when to trust\, question\, or reject its output. This roundtable will explore how faculty are building critical AI literacy by asking students to test AI within public health contexts\, compare AI-generated work with their own analysis\, identify errors and limitations\, and assess where AI adds value. Participants will discuss how these approaches can strengthen disciplinary knowledge\, information literacy\, and students’ ability to use AI with informed judgment. \nCore takeaway:\nAI literacy means more than knowing how to use AI; students need the disciplinary knowledge and critical judgment to evaluate when its outputs are useful\, incomplete\, or wrong. \nREGSITER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Virtual Roundtable: Creating AI-Powered Learning Experiences
DESCRIPTION:How can AI create learning experiences that would be difficult to replicate in a traditional classroom? This roundtable will showcase faculty using AI-powered simulations and practice environments to give students opportunities to apply knowledge\, make decisions\, receive feedback\, and learn through repeated practice. Participants will explore the instructional possibilities\, as well as the design considerations\, of creating interactive AI learning experiences. \nCore takeaway:\nAI can create interactive\, repeatable learning environments where students practice applying knowledge and making decisions\, not simply generating content. Faculty will learn how custom AI is being used as a tool and how to set up custom AI. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Virtual Roundtable: Designing AI-Enabled Tools for Teaching
DESCRIPTION:How can faculty move beyond general-purpose AI tools to create more intentional\, course-specific learning experiences? This roundtable will explore AI-enabled tools and frameworks designed around specific courses\, learning objectives\, and instructional needs. Faculty will share practical examples of course copilots\, guided AI experiences\, and structured approaches to course design\, and discuss what it takes to develop\, implement\, and refine them. \nCore takeaway:\nFaculty can move from experimenting with general-purpose AI to intentionally designing AI tools and frameworks around specific learning goals. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Virtual Roundtable: Redesigning Assignments and Assessments with AI
DESCRIPTION:How can assignments and assessments evolve when generative AI becomes part of the learning environment? This roundtable will feature practical examples of faculty intentionally incorporating AI into student work\, from using Socratic questioning to connect experiences with competencies to using AI-generated perspectives to challenge assumptions and strengthen arguments. Participants will discuss approaches that preserve authentic learning while building critical thinking\, reflection\, and student accountability. \nCore takeaway:\nEffective assignment redesign gives AI a purposeful role in the learning process without replacing the thinking students need to do themselves. Faculty will learn how to leverage standard AI\, and while it is easier to implement\, there are various downsides to consider rather than using custom AI. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Working with the All of Us Research Program data: Building a Community of Researchers at OHSU
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Alicia Johnson\, MPH \nThe NIH All of Us Research Program is an incredible resource to researchers\, providing access to genomics and health data from a large sample of participants that includes historically marginalized groups and enabling health discoveries that promise to improve the lives of individuals. However\, individual researchers at OHSU and beyond who work with All of Us data face numerous challenges navigating the platform and data structure and often lack support in working through issues that arise. \nIn this inaugural seminar in the FUSE series\, we aim to begin building a community of researchers who wish to work with the All of Us data. After a brief introduction to the All of Us Research Program\, several members of this nascent community will share their experiences\, challenges\, and tips for getting started. Resources for working with this data will be shared. \nAll are welcome and no prior background with the All of Us Research Program or in data management or analysis will be assumed. This seminar will not be recorded \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

The goal of the OBHC is to foster substantive inquiry\, discussion\, and education in bioethics and medical humanism by bringing together scholars\, professionals\, and students from diverse disciplines\, including medicine\, philosophy\, literature\, sociology\, religion\, public health\, law\, and policy. We aim to create an interdisciplinary and inclusive environment where critical examination of the human experience is the norm. We want to provoke thought\, deepen moral imagination\, and help generate new insights into our health care experiences that both challenge and edify all who attend.

SUMMARY:Measuring and Projecting Population Health: Child Mortality in the G7 Countries and U.S. Life-Course Obesity
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Omar Karlsson \nThe talk has two parts. The first examines subnational variation in mortality before age 20 years across the G7 countries. Using vital statistics and population data\, it constructs age-specific mortality rates for states\, provinces\, and comparable regions and examines geographic inequalities\, with particular attention to the United States. \nThe second part focuses on obesity in the United States. Projections of mortality\, disability\, and health-care needs\, as well as models of chronic disease\, require estimates of how obesity develops across age and differs between birth cohorts because life-course exposure shapes later-life health and disease. Most data on obesity come from repeated cross-sectional surveys\, which include new individuals in each round rather than following the same people as they age. The talk presents a method for simulating trajectories of body weight from these surveys. \nHosted by PSU Population Research Center
