SUMMARY:Spatial Hot/Cold Spot Analysis of the Older Adult Population in Portland\, Oregon
DESCRIPTION:SPATIAL HOT/COLD SPOT ANALYSIS OF THE OLDER ADULT POPULATION IN PORTLAND\, OREGON: PUMA GEOGRAPHY – ACS 2020–2024 5-YEAR ESTIMATES \nPaul K. Ayernor (PhD)\nSenior Research Associate\nNYC-Department of Aging \nThis paper reports a Getis-Ord Gi* hot/cold spot analysis of older adults across 162 census tracts in Portland\, Oregon\, using American Community Survey (ACS) 2020–2024 5-year estimates. Two age groups are analyzed separately\, ages 55–59 and ages 60 and older\, each measured as a share of tract population rather than a raw count. Significance is adjusted for multiple testing with the Benjamini-Hochberg false discovery rate (FDR). \nAfter adjustment\, the 55–59 share shows no significant clustering anywhere in the city. The 60+ share shows six hot-spot tracts and two cold-spot tracts\, all at the 90% confidence level. Five of the six hot spots form one contiguous cluster in the southwest of the city; the cold spots include one large tract along the northern edge of the city. \nThe paper reviews applications of hot spot methods to older-adult populations and services\, and Census Bureau practice on small-area geography and margins of error. The results are positioned as a first-stage descriptive input to later accessibility and equity analysis\, not as an endpoint.

SUMMARY:From Data to Dialogue: Connecting Data Users to Authoritative Public Health Data with AI
DESCRIPTION:ASPPH invites members and colleagues to join the next installment of its Virtual AI Roundtable Discussion Series\, From Data to Dialogue: Connecting Data Users to Authoritative Public Health Data with AI\, on Monday\, October 26\, from 1:00–2:00 PM ET. This interactive session will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve access to trusted public health data while maintaining research integrity\, transparency\, and responsible use. \nBuilding on ASPPH’s Harnessing Innovation: Artificial Intelligence for Academic Public Health framework\, the roundtable series provides opportunities for peer learning\, practical discussion\, and knowledge exchange around emerging AI applications. \nThe series launched in September with four sessions focused on integrating AI into public health education. Discussions explored building critical AI literacy\, creating AI-powered learning experiences\, designing AI-enabled teaching tools\, and rethinking assignments and assessments. Together\, these sessions highlighted practical approaches and challenges for incorporating AI responsibly into academic settings. \nThe upcoming October 26 roundtable shifts the conversation toward public health data access and research. Featuring Kevin Hobbie and Madeleine Short Fabic of ICF\, the session will include a live demonstration of the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program’s Model Context Protocol implementation. Participants will examine data readiness\, reproducibility\, validation\, and human oversight\, with opportunities to discuss implications for public health research and practice. \nParticipants can earn one Certified in Public Health (CPH) continuing education credit per session. Registration is free for ASPPH members\, while non-member registration is $35 per session. \nASPPH encourages faculty\, researchers\, students\, and public health professionals to participate and continue the conversation through the MyASPPH discussion community. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT
