SUMMARY:FREE Trans Law Film Screening - Heightened Scrutiny
DESCRIPTION:HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY on campus.\nFree screening of the acclaimed documentary feature film and a Q&A with its award-winning director Sam Feder. \nWednesday\, January 28\, 2026\n5 – 7 pm\nAt Portland State University\, location available upon RSVP. \nA reception with light refreshments will start at 4pm\, hosted by PSU’s Queer Resource Center. \nHeightened Scrutiny follows Chase Strangio\, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court\, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. The film exposes the dangerous role of mainstream media in fueling anti-trans legislation\, uncovering how biased coverage drives hate\, endangers lives\, and threatens democracy itself. With insights from journalists like Jelani Cobb\, Lydia Polgreen\, and Gina Chua\, and activists like Laverne Cox\, the story dismantles anti-trans disinformation and highlights its devastating real-world impact. \nSam Feder is a Peabody Award-nominated film director and writer. Feder’s films explore the intersection of visibility and politics along the lines of race\, class\, and gender. Sam directed the award-winning Netflix original documentary Disclosure (2020) and the widely acclaimed documentary Kate Bornstein Is a Queer & Pleasant Danger (2014). Feder was recently invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Documentary Branch. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:PSU Faculty-Led: Mexico Travel Abroad Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Advancing Indigenous Health Equity Through Food Sovereignty\, Activism and Healing\nThis two-week immersive program in Oaxaca\, Mexico invites students to explore Indigenous health equity through land-based learning\, community engagement\, and traditional healing practices. In partnership with Spanish House MX\, participants will learn from Indigenous knowledge holders\, traditional ecological practitioners\, food sovereignty leaders\, and community activists working to advance cultural preservation and environmental stewardship. Through experiential workshops\, archaeological site visits\, and hands-on cultural activities\, students will examine the deep interconnections between land\, identity\, wellness\, and justice in Oaxacan Indigenous communities. \nThe curriculum weaves together public health\, Indigenous studies\, environmental justice\, and decolonizing methodologies. Students will participate in temazcal (traditional sweat-lodge) ceremonies\, medicinal plant workshops\, cooking classes\, artisan craft sessions\, and guided visits to Monte Albán and regional cultural centers. Academic discussions and reflective practices—grounded in Indigenous values of balance\, community\, respect\, and relationality—encourage students to critically examine colonial histories and contemporary movements for Indigenous resurgence. \nParticipants are housed in centrally located hotels in Oaxaca’s historic center and travel via private transportation for all program activities. With daily breakfast\, local coordination\, bilingual staff\, and structured reflection sessions\, the program offers a supportive environment for deep cultural learning. By the end of the experience\, students will gain new insights into Indigenous health sovereignty and develop skills that support culturally responsive\, community-centered public health practice. \nZoom Link: https://pdx.zoom.us/j/84027427294 \nREGISTER FOR INFO SESSIONS
