SUMMARY:OCTRI-BERD Seminar - Algorithmic bias: a practical introduction
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Alicia Johnson\, MPH \nClinical algorithms assist healthcare providers with decision-making based on a small set of demographic and clinical characteristics. While they can be useful tools\, algorithms are created using data from sources such as electronic health records or longitudinal studies. They reflect the features present in that data – which may include a lack of representation of various subgroups of the population\, selection bias that may differ among subgroups\, systematic measurement error\, and more. In clinical settings\, these biases can manifest as results that may be inaccurate for certain groups of patients\, potentially leading to misdiagnosis\, missed opportunities for treatment\, and other undesirable outcomes. \nThis talk provides an introduction to the concept of algorithmic bias\, illustrating how it may show up through examples from various areas in medicine. The goal of this talk is to support attendees in understanding algorithmic bias\, the limitations of clinical prediction rules\, and the impact algorithmic bias may have on patients. We will also discuss how to begin to identify and minimize the impact of algorithmic bias. \nThis introductory seminar is appropriate for those who are familiar with clinical algorithms and are curious to learn about their limitations. Healthcare providers\, analysts\, students\, and others are welcome. \nRegister via Compass. This seminar will be recorded.

SUMMARY:ASPSU Advocate for PSU and Higher Education in Oregon!
DESCRIPTION:Oregon is facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Recession. As legislators face difficult budget decisions\, they need to hear from you about the importance of protecting investments in PSU that will fuel a prosperous future for Oregon. \nThis year\, we’re teaming up with all of Oregon’s public universities in Salem to make sure they know how important higher education is. Now\, more than ever\, it is important to share with legislators why protecting funding for PSU is critical to Oregon’s workforce and economic development. As the number one institution in the state for social mobility\, we are giving Oregonians the opportunities they need to thrive and contribute to our communities. \nIt is more vital than ever that the student voice be represented in these conversations\, so we are calling on our fellow PSU students to join us this February for University Day at the Capitol. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Stats & Stanzas Lab
DESCRIPTION:Every social movement of health consequence has been backed by songs\, poems\, and dance to codify resistance\, galvanize community\, inspire imagination\, and testify for more just futures. For those of us “at the margins\,” creative modes of expression have always been critical to our learning and survival. For us\, “poetry is not a luxury” (Lorde). Poetry offers a necessary space for healing\, resistance\, and resurgence as public health continues the struggle towards health justice. It has the power to push boundaries and reimagine narratives of health equity—opening new dialogues that (re)center the voice and agency of those most burdened by social inequality. \nIn a time when LOVE *and* RESISTANCE must be simultaneous acts\, this “lab” will continue the work of illuminating the necessity of both STATS *and* STANZAS to create public health futures of radical possibility. Through engaging poetry as praxis\, we’ll explore the epistemological\, ethical\, and material imperative of remixing/reimagining public health knowledge production\, expression\, and curation practices to more fully—and unapologetically—”center the margins\,” with poetry a necessary format of health equity discourse for resistance\, refusal\, and healing. \nA space and community of/for poetic health justice at the intersections of poetry & public health\, created & curated via: \n\nReading poetry\nReading/critiquing public health literature\nWriting & workshopping poetry\nPoetry workshops w/ guest facilitators\nOpen mic nights / poetry reading events\nPoetry contests\nPoetry chapbooks\nPublishing poetry\nLectures\, panels\, & invited speakers\n\nPI (Poetic Instigator): Dr. Ryan J. Petteway\, Associate Professor\, SPH \nCo-PIs: Looking for 1 undergraduate and 1 graduate student… \nMembers/Participants/Poets: Students\, faculty\, & staff in SPH \nQuestions: petteway@pdx.edu

SUMMARY:PSU Faculty-Led: Mexico Travel Abroad Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Advancing Indigenous Health Equity Through Food Sovereignty\, Activism and Healing\nThis two-week immersive program in Oaxaca\, Mexico invites students to explore Indigenous health equity through land-based learning\, community engagement\, and traditional healing practices. In partnership with Spanish House MX\, participants will learn from Indigenous knowledge holders\, traditional ecological practitioners\, food sovereignty leaders\, and community activists working to advance cultural preservation and environmental stewardship. Through experiential workshops\, archaeological site visits\, and hands-on cultural activities\, students will examine the deep interconnections between land\, identity\, wellness\, and justice in Oaxacan Indigenous communities. \nThe curriculum weaves together public health\, Indigenous studies\, environmental justice\, and decolonizing methodologies. Students will participate in temazcal (traditional sweat-lodge) ceremonies\, medicinal plant workshops\, cooking classes\, artisan craft sessions\, and guided visits to Monte Albán and regional cultural centers. Academic discussions and reflective practices—grounded in Indigenous values of balance\, community\, respect\, and relationality—encourage students to critically examine colonial histories and contemporary movements for Indigenous resurgence. \nParticipants are housed in centrally located hotels in Oaxaca’s historic center and travel via private transportation for all program activities. With daily breakfast\, local coordination\, bilingual staff\, and structured reflection sessions\, the program offers a supportive environment for deep cultural learning. By the end of the experience\, students will gain new insights into Indigenous health sovereignty and develop skills that support culturally responsive\, community-centered public health practice. \nZoom Link: https://pdx.zoom.us/j/84027427294 \nREGISTER FOR INFO SESSIONS

SUMMARY:Spotlight on Faculty: Confronting Legacies of Racism & Anti-Fatness in Public Health
DESCRIPTION:Spotlight on Faculty Series: Dr. Hannah Cory \nEnding Public Harm: Confronting Legacies of Racism & Anti-Fatness in Public Health\nDr. Hannah Cory is an Assistant Professor in Health Promotion and Community Health at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. As a registered dietitian and public health nutrition researcher she is devoted to rethinking how society understands and values body diversity. What happens when the systems meant to protect our health instead reinforce racism and anti-fatness\, undermining people’s confidence and safety in their bodies? In centering the lived experiences of minoritized communities\, Dr. Cory will discuss how discrimination shapes everything from eating behaviors and mental health to chronic disease risk – revealing how nutrition challenges\, often blamed on individual choices\, are rooted in broader social inequities.
