Getting Ready To Graduate?
Here’s What You Need To Know: Dates and Definitions

Graduation refers to formal certification of a student’s completion of all academic program requirements, including comprehensive or certification exams. Upon certification, the degree or certificate is noted as “awarded” on the student’s academic transcript. Formal certification and awarding (also called conferral) of degrees and certificates occur at the University level, in the Registrars’ Offices.  Students may graduate from their academic programs in any academic term. You must formally apply to graduate in order to receive your degree or certificate.

Graduation Ceremonies
Graduation ceremonies occur once a year, in June. Graduation ceremonies are an opportunity for students, families, friends, and the School and University communities to celebrate their academic achievements. The School of Public Health is a partnership between OHSU and PSU. As such, there are several graduation ceremonies in which SPH students may participate.

  • OHSU Convocation: Friday, June 9, 2023, time and location TBA. This is a large ceremony for SPH graduate students and students in other OHSU Schools and Colleges.
  • PSU Commencement: Friday – Sunday, June 16,17,18, 2023, specific day, time, and location TBA. Commencement  is a large ceremony for all SPH students (graduate and undergraduate) and students in other PSU Schools and Colleges.
  • SPH Hooding: This ceremony, for graduating MPH, MS, and PhD students, is specific to the School of Public Health and is held in conjunction with the OHSU Convocation. Graduating students walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and be “hooded” by their program director or dissertation chair.

Graduation Checklist

  1. Check your degree audit to make sure you will complete all of your degree requirements, including comprehensive and/or CPH exams, by the last day of the term you expect to graduate. Meet with your advisor to plan your final coursework and/or exams, and to clear up any outstanding issues.
  2. Apply to graduate. Students may graduate in any academic term. You must submit a graduation application by the relevant deadline in order to receive your degree or certificate.  But no need to wait — do it as soon as you are reasonably confident about the term you expect to graduate. NOTE: Deadlines vary by the university through which a student registers. Deadlines also differ for undergraduate vs. graduate students.
    • All SPH undergraduate students; dual MPH/MSW and MPH/MURP degree students; and certain PhD students who matriculated prior to Fall 2017 are PSU REGISTRANTS.  These students must apply to graduate in PSU Banweb and pay the PSU graduation fee. In general, undergraduate students must apply two terms prior to their anticipated term of graduation (specific deadlines are here), and graduate students must apply by the first Friday of the anticipated term of graduation; specific deadlines for all terms are here). Summer 2023 grads please note: you must apply to graduate by April 7, 2023, for your name to be included in the Commencement program. Students who apply after this date may still participate in Commencement, but will not have their name in the printed program.

Dual degree MPH/MSW and MPH/MURP candidates must apply to graduate from both degrees, and submit a GO-14 Shared Master’s Credits form to the PSU Graduate School.

    •  All other SPH graduate students are OHSU REGISTRANTS. These students must apply to graduate in OHSU Student Self-Service by Friday of the fourth week of of the anticipated term of graduation, and pay the OHSU graduation fee. Specific deadlines are posted hereSummer 2022 grads please note: you must apply to graduate by the spring deadline of April 28, 2023, if you wish to participate in June graduation ceremonies, in order to allow enough time for planning and printing materials.

Dual degree MD/MPH candidates must also submit an Application for Dual Degree Form to the OHSU Registrar’s Office.

— Final official transcripts will be released by the relevant Registrar’s Office only after degree verification is complete and all institutional obligations have been satisfied.–
