Dr. Lynn Marshall Named One Of The First Fellows Of The American Society For Bone And Mineral Research

Lynn Marshall, Sc.D., professor of epidemiology at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, has been elected to the 2021 class of Fellows of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

The Fellow of the ASBMR designation recognizes long-term members who have shown a commitment to ASBMR through service as a volunteer of the Society, have made outstanding contributions to the field of bone and mineral science, and have published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR®) and/or JBMR® Plus. Fellows are nominated by their peers, followed by an evaluation and selection by a review committee and approved by the ASBMR Council.

Dr. Marshall is a doctorally-trained epidemiologist whose research focuses on aging and musculoskeletal epidemiology. She helped establish the landmark Osteoporotic Fractures in Men cohort study, or MrOS, the first long-term study of osteoporosis and fracture among U.S. men. MrOS included men 65 years or older from 6 regions including Portland OR. Within the MrOS Research Group, she had a lead role in developing epidemiologic studies of spinal degenerative conditions and back pain. Her research publications on back pain and falls in U.S. women and men have been cited by authors from China, Japan, Sweden and the UK. Her research awards include a John Haddad Young Investigator Award from the ASBMR and a US Bone and Joint Decade New Investigator Award. Her research publications have twice been selected by the Faculty of 1000 as recommended articles of special significance in the life sciences.

In the School of Public Health, Dr. Marshall teaches epidemiology core course and also serves as the Program Director for the PhD in Epidemiology. She mentored numerous graduate students in epidemiologic research, guiding them in data analysis and publication. Dr. Marshall is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue mentoring students in developing their epidemiologic research, especially in studies involving musculoskeletal conditions. “Throughout my career, I benefitted from the generosity of those before me who believed in my potential and created opportunities for me. Dr. Marshall receive her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and doctoral degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. The 2021 ASBMR Fellows will be recognized at the 2021 Annual Meeting in October in San Diego.
