Student Leadership Council 2024 Faculty Awards

The Student Leadership Council is excited to announce the recipients of the 2024 Faculty Awards. We would like to thank all faculty members at the School of Public Health for their dedication to the school, and all students who nominated faculty members for this recognition.

Give a shout out to the recipients if you see them around!

Teaching Associate Professor Richard Dozal-Lockwood
“Throughout the program, he has supported my professional development by sharing applicable resources and opportunities that would expand my learning. I appreciate his dedication to teaching and contagious enthusiasm for student learning. He has been a positive influence throughout my MPH experience and I believe he is well deserving of this award.”

“His profound impact on my journey through higher education has been transformative, instilling in me the motivation, confidence, and passion to pursue a career in public health. Throughout my undergraduate journey, Dr. Dozal-Lockwood served as a beacon of encouragement and support, challenging me to push beyond my perceived limitations and strive for excellence. I am forever grateful for his mentorship, which has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional trajectory.”

Professor Betty Izumi
“Dr. Izumi exerts genuine joy and kindness to all those that have the privilege of working with her. Dr. Izumi is a strong leader in enhancing equity and diversity in all that she does. The multimodal approach and holistic learning environment that Dr. Izumi creates is one that makes you feel valued and respected. Sharing our ideas is what leads to impactful sustainable change. I thank Dr. Izumi and my experience in Japan for providing the hope and inspiration I had been looking for to maintain my motivation to finish my MPH and pursue a career in which I can apply the concepts that I’ve been learning.”

Assistant Professor Sarah Andrea
“Dr. Andrea fosters a collaborative learning environment and encourages students to think with an anti-racist lens. Her professional achievements include contributions to research in employment quality in the United States, which will help lead to policy implementation and a reduction in health disparities. She helps create a sense of community among the students with group advising sessions and virtual communications. She has also served as a great mentor, providing input on courses to take, supporting students with their Practice Experiences, and asking thoughtful questions at student presentations.”

Adjunct Professor Jeff Sconyers
“Professor Sconyers teaching is both engaging and impactful, translating into real-world policy, engagement, and public communications initiatives. As a direct result of an assignment from his Health Policy class, my Letter to the Editor was published in the Oregonian—a clear example of his ability to connect classroom learning to tangible outcomes. His curriculum is thoughtful, featuring a balanced mix of lectures, textbooks, videos, KFF headlines, class discussions, policy resources, and guest speakers. His deep understanding of teaching, learning, motivation, and resource utilization creates an engaging and effective learning environment. His student-focused approach and sense of humor make his classes a pleasure to attend. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from Professor Sconyers and consider it a privilege.”

Associate Professor Julia Goodman
“Dr. Goodman’s achievements extend beyond her role as educator and mentor: she is a distinguished researcher whose work addresses critical issues at the intersection of public health and labor policy. Her research on the social determinants of health among pregnant individuals and the impacts of work-related policies like paid family leave is salient and impactful to current policy issues. Her findings have informed discussions on health equity and have been pivotal in shaping specific policy recommendations. Additionally, Dr Goodman adds to the global community integrating perspectives from her recent Fulbright scholarship in Mexico. Throughout her tenure Dr. Goodman has been a thoughtful, productive, charismatic leader at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. She has shown an unwavering dedication to student success, engaging students as colleagues and helping us thrive. Her long-standing service is a testament to her commitment to the field of public health and supporting the next generation of public health leaders and scholars.”
