Student Leadership Council presents 2020 Faculty Awards
Five SPH faculty recognized for their excellence in teaching, mentorship, and service
Every spring the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Student Leadership Council (SLC), the SPH student government body, honors members of the faculty with awards for excellence based on teaching, mentorship, and service. The SLC, which acts as the student voice for the School, bases the awards on nominations submitted by students.
The 2020 Faculty Award for Excellence recipients include:
Faculty Award for Excellent in Teaching
Dr. Dawn Richardson
“Dr. Richardson shows up! She is present, focused and prepared to teach. Her genuine presence and commitment to enriching students’ knowledge beyond the classroom have been stimulating and thought provoking. She is committed to explaining things within larger context. She teaches racial health equity from the core of her course work, and have conversations start from there. Public health cannot be studied in isolation and Dr. Richardson has thoroughly installed this realization in us.”
Dr. Julia Goodman
“Dr. Goodman has consistently demonstrated her passion for and commitment to teaching. We have seen her provide positive guidance, helpful coaching, and constructive feedback with all students with whom she works. Dr. Goodman has established a strong reputation with students throughout the SPH and beyond. We strongly believe that her academic training, her strong sense of self and her passion for mentoring others in the field has made her an invaluable asset to the faculty within the School of Public Health.”
Faculty Award for Excellent in Mentorship
Dr. Sherril Gelmon
“Dr. Gelmon consistently goes above and beyond the standards of our field in dedicating time to helping students advance in their professional careers, providing important and personalized guidance to each of us, and creating opportunities through her own scholarly activities for students to develop their skills and abilities. Dr. Gelmon serves as a positive role model to faculty and students alike, setting a high bar for achievement and ensuring that others have the support, resources and guidance necessary to meet their goals.”
Dr. Jonathan Snowden
“Dr. Snowden is an outstanding mentor, educator, researcher and public health champion in the area of sexual and reproductive health. He has been extremely generous with both his time and wisdom, and genuinely cares about the academic journey of his students. Students also highlight Dr. Snowden’s significant contributions to mentoring and service in the epidemiology community and including, including national presentations, and teaching and mentoring students in those communities.”
Faculty Award for Excellence in Service
Dr. Liana Winett
“Dr. Winett is an icon for guidance and leadership for students. Her most profound impact is through her close interaction with students and her dedication to students. She is extremely attentive. She actively listens and responds. She also does not hesitate to provide constructive feedback and mentorship where needed. Dr. Winett provides an exemplary role model for many students with whom she interacts. My career goal is to commit to research and teaching and play the role of an academic administrator someday. It is my sincere hope that I will affect my future students and colleagues in my professional life as meaningfully as Dr. Winett does in many positive ways.”
