DESCRIPTION:OCTRI Research Forum\nBiostatistics\, Epidemiology\, and Research Design (BERD) Program \nJessica Minnier\, Ph.D. and Meike Niederhausen\, Ph.D. \nIn this two-part interactive workshop\, we will introduce the freely available statistical software programs R and RStudio to attendees with no prior experience. We will cover how to use RStudio to write and run code\, introduce data structure types\, and demonstrate commands for working with data: loading\, viewing\, summarizing\, plotting\, cleaning\, and saving. You will learn basic R data wrangling and plotting principles\, and how to use them to create high-quality reproducible documents to present your work. \nPart 1: Thursday\, April 30\, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.\nPart 2: Monday\, May 11\, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. \nNo prior experience in R or RStudio is necessary. Installation materials will be circulated ahead of Part 1. We encourage you to bring a laptop with R and RStudio installed. SUMMARY:OCTRI-BERD Seminar - Algorithmic bias: a practical introduction
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Alicia Johnson\, MPH \nClinical algorithms assist healthcare providers with decision-making based on a small set of demographic and clinical characteristics. While they can be useful tools\, algorithms are created using data from sources such as electronic health records or longitudinal studies. They reflect the features present in that data – which may include a lack of representation of various subgroups of the population\, selection bias that may differ among subgroups\, systematic measurement error\, and more. In clinical settings\, these biases can manifest as results that may be inaccurate for certain groups of patients\, potentially leading to misdiagnosis\, missed opportunities for treatment\, and other undesirable outcomes. \nThis talk provides an introduction to the concept of algorithmic bias\, illustrating how it may show up through examples from various areas in medicine. The goal of this talk is to support attendees in understanding algorithmic bias\, the limitations of clinical prediction rules\, and the impact algorithmic bias may have on patients. We will also discuss how to begin to identify and minimize the impact of algorithmic bias. \nThis introductory seminar is appropriate for those who are familiar with clinical algorithms and are curious to learn about their limitations.
