Biography

As a Professor Emeritus, Dr. Dennis McCarty works at the intersection of policy, research and practice as he assesses the organization, financing and quality of prevention and treatment services for alcohol and drug disorders. He serves as the director of the Education Core for the Methamphetamine Abuse Research Center and the co-principal investigator for the Western States Node of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network. He is also co-investigator for an evaluation of the impacts of Oregon’s Coordinated Care Organizations on prevention and treatment for alcohol and drug use disorders. He also serves on the Oregon Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission.

From 1989 to 1995, McCarty directed the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Experienced Faculty With Diverse Backgrounds

More than 150 faculty members work within the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They have a wide range of expertise, from monitoring and assessing health risks and opportunities in populations, to helping build health-supporting social environments through policy, advocacy, and programs. They are educators, advisors, researchers, practitioners and community leaders. They come from backgrounds in quantitative, behavioral, environmental and social sciences, policy and government, exercise and health sciences and anthropology, among many other areas. They all work in collaboration with each other and with community partners, and are especially focused on the training and education of future leaders and practitioners in the public health fields.
