Biography

Dr. Lightfoot received her master’s and doctorate in Counseling Psychology from UCLA. Dr. Lightfoot is dedicated to advancing health equity among marginalized youth. Her research focuses on improving the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults, as well as the development of culturally competent, efficacious preventive interventions for populations disproportionately burdened by health disparities. She has obtained NIH funding to design and implement preventive interventions, including culturally-tailored interventions for youth involved in the juvenile justice system, youth experiencing homelessness, youth living with HIV, young sexual minority youth, and youth in medical clinics and settings, among others. Her research has developed interventions and bridged the gap from development to implementation. She has been the Principal Investigator on numerous R01 and other R-level grants, as well as center grants and foundation grants, including from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, William T. Grant Foundation, and others. She has had a distinguished career in community-engaged research, receiving awards for her community partnership efforts.
 
Dr. Lightfoot has over 25 years of leadership in public health, including serving as the inaugural Dean for Research as well as Director of multiple NIH-funded centers. She also has a proven track record in mentoring the next generation of scientists.In addition to serving multiple times as a standing review committee member on NIH review groups for HIV/AID research, she was a member of the National Advisory Mental Health Council (NAMHC). In addition, she was a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies) Committee on Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral (MEB) Development Among Children and Youth, has served on the editorial boards for numerous journals, and is currently an associate editor for the Annals of LGBTQ Public and Population Health.

Experienced Faculty With Diverse Backgrounds

More than 150 faculty members work within the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They have a wide range of expertise, from monitoring and assessing health risks and opportunities in populations, to helping build health-supporting social environments through policy, advocacy, and programs. They are educators, advisors, researchers, practitioners and community leaders. They come from backgrounds in quantitative, behavioral, environmental and social sciences, policy and government, exercise and health sciences and anthropology, among many other areas. They all work in collaboration with each other and with community partners, and are especially focused on the training and education of future leaders and practitioners in the public health fields.
