Biography

Sherril Gelmon is Professor Emerita of Health Systems Management & Policy in the School of Public Health. She is a health services researcher who focuses on health systems organizations, performance improvement, and community engagement. During her full-time employment at PSU from 1994-2024 she taught numerous courses in health systems management and policy, chaired 19 dissertation committees, was a member of another 16 dissertation committees, and served as primary advisor to dozens of MPH and PhD students.

She was the founding director of the Health Systems and Policy PhD program (2013-2023), chair of the Division of Public Administration in PSU’s Hatfield School of Government (2008-2014), coordinator of the three-university Oregon M.P.H. program (1998-2000), and coordinator of PSU’s health management programs (1994-2007). She previously led the improvement science curricula for OHSU Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine residents (2004-2018), and OHSU’s Foundational Improvement Science Curriculum (2015-2017).

Before coming to PSU in 1994, she concurrently served as Executive Director of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration (ACEHSA) and Director of Academic Affairs for the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) in the Washington, DC area. Her previous positions were at the University of Toronto, Woods Gordon Management Consultants, Royal University Hospital, and the Orthopaedic & Arthritic Hospital.

Her most recent research addresses supporting care partners of people living with dementia. Past research projects include evaluation of Oregon’s Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) program; implementation of Oregon’s Patient-Centered Primary Care Home (PCPCH) program; evaluation of the Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future Initiative; and evaluation of the Community Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative.

Experienced Faculty With Diverse Backgrounds

More than 150 faculty members work within the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They have a wide range of expertise, from monitoring and assessing health risks and opportunities in populations, to helping build health-supporting social environments through policy, advocacy, and programs. They are educators, advisors, researchers, practitioners and community leaders. They come from backgrounds in quantitative, behavioral, environmental and social sciences, policy and government, exercise and health sciences and anthropology, among many other areas. They all work in collaboration with each other and with community partners, and are especially focused on the training and education of future leaders and practitioners in the public health fields.
