Biography

Dr. Fortmann has an affiliate appointment in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health as a Community Based Professor in the Epidemiology programs. In this role, Professor Fortmann’s work includes collaborating on research with SPH Primary Faculty members, mentoring junior faculty, and facilitate practice experience opportunities with SPH students.

Professor Fortmann has over 35 years of experience in cardiovascular and chronic disease prevention research. He brings extensive experience in large-scale community and clinical trials, interdisciplinary research, and all aspects of design, measurement, and analysis in cardiovascular research.
In addition to his academic appointment in the SPH, he is also currently a Senior Director, Science Programs and Senior Investigator, Medical Director at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research (CHR). Professor Fortmann has conducted both population- and individual-level studies of cardiovascular risk factors and disease rates, smoking cessation, the influence of tobacco marketing on adolescent smoking, and exercise and diet change. He is currently leading a study to see if increased access to public transit benefits health or reduces health care costs. He is also jointly leading a study of cardiovascular disease among Asians and Pacific Islanders in Hawaii and California, and is a co-investigator on a study of diabetes disparities among these groups in Hawaii.

Experienced Faculty With Diverse Backgrounds

More than 150 faculty members work within the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They have a wide range of expertise, from monitoring and assessing health risks and opportunities in populations, to helping build health-supporting social environments through policy, advocacy, and programs. They are educators, advisors, researchers, practitioners and community leaders. They come from backgrounds in quantitative, behavioral, environmental and social sciences, policy and government, exercise and health sciences and anthropology, among many other areas. They all work in collaboration with each other and with community partners, and are especially focused on the training and education of future leaders and practitioners in the public health fields.
