PUSH: Black Mamas Changing the Culture of Birth
Come celebrate the joy and resilience of Black mothers and families!
An invitation to come laugh, shed a tear, and open your heart to the beautiful storytelling of mamas changing the culture of birth. OHSU is proud to partner with Black Futures for Perinatal Health and Beirut Wedding: World Theatre Project to Present a Groundbreaking Theatrical Production on the Maternal Health Crisis and Black Mothers’ Voices for Healing.
This powerful one hour play is co-created and produced by Dr Roberta Suzette Hunte, Bobby Bermea, and Jamie Rea of Beirut Wedding. Informed by the voices and expertise of Black doulas, midwives, public health workers, researchers, home visitors, and birthing people, PUSH brings to life the realities of navigating U.S. medical systems while honoring the joy, humanity, and transformative power of community-based care.
Through storytelling, this performance sheds light on disparities in maternal healthcare and uplifts birthing villages, a network of community care providers, as a pathway toward healing, justice, and culturally grounded care.
This production is made possible through funding from Oregon Health & Science University Departments of Family Medicine, OB/Gyn, Center for Women’s Health and School of Nursing and Drexel University Ubuntu Center. Light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP, but we are unlikely to sell out. All are invited, even without tickets as the venue was changed from Knight Cancer Research Institute to OHSU Auditorium.
