Recent Awards and News

RGS Roadmap to 2030 Draft Available

Research and Graduate Studies (RGS) has developed the penultimate draft of the Research and Graduate Studies Roadmap to 2030. This roadmap outlines ambitious goals for the future of research and graduate education at PSU.

What’s included:

  • New mission, vision, and guiding commitments for RGS that align with PSU’s Strategic Plan: Future in Focus.
  • 16 goals, 46 objectives, and 168 strategies, divided into five integrated sections covering topics such as research excellence, student success, operational excellence, and inclusive excellence.
  • A detailed outline of how the roadmap aligns with the university’s broader strategic goals, provided in Appendix 1.

Eric Hall Featured on APHA Jumbotron

Eric Hall was featured on the jumbotron at this year’s American Public Health Association (APHA) conference for his research collaboration with Collaborative for the Advancement of Public Health Metrics (CAMP). APHA selected CAMP as one of fifteen esteemed public health thought leaders to be featured on film at this year’s APHA meeting in late October 2024. CAMP has had a decade-long commitment to pioneering research and impactful public health strategies, especially in the fields of HIV, STDs, tuberculosis, and viral hepatitis. The film feature was not only shown at the APHA conference, but will continue to inspire on APHA’s TV channel throughout the coming year. This collaboration includes Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Washington, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, and a varied Advisory Core comprising state and local public health entities.

Ryan J. Petteway Publishes Chapters In Racism: Science & Tools for the Public Health Profession

Ryan J. Petteway published two chapters in the second edition of Racism: Science & Tools for the Public Health Profession through APHA press. The two chapters dive into the union of creative arts, power, and antiracist praxis, highlighting the indispensable role of creative expression in the ongoing struggle for health justice. Alumni Rosol Mikail receives Dr. Susan Goodwin Gerberich Injury Control and Emergency Health Services (ICEHS) Student Paper Award

Alumni Rosol Mikail received the prestigious Dr. Susan Goodwin Gerberich Injury Control and Emergency Health Services (ICEHS) Student Paper Award at the APHA Conference, recognizing her significant contributions from her MPH practice experience and integrative project in which she evaluated Oregon’s Extreme Risk Protection Order for preventing mass shootings.

Jenn Reed Receives ICEHS Presidential Scholarship

Jenn Reed, current HS&P doctoral candidate, received the ICEHS Presidential Scholarship at the APHA Conference for her excellent contributions to the field of violence prevention.

Kelly M. Reavis Appeared on KGW News

Kelly M. Reavis appeared on KGW news to discuss her work in the groundbreaking research on the connection between hearing loss and Parkinson’s disease. Reavis collaborated with lead author Lee Neilson, assistant professor of neurology in the OHSU School of Medicine, and co-authors Jack Wiedrick, with the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design Program at OHSU, and Gregory D. Scott, professor of pathology in the OHSU School of Medicine through their connection at VA Portland. Their research findings suggest that using hearing aids promptly after the onset of hearing loss may significantly reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s. Watch the replay.

Paul Tratnyek Appointed Associate Editor for the Environmental Science & Technology Journal

Paul Tratnyek has been appointed as an Associate Editor for the Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) journal. Environmental Science & Technology is celebrated as the most prestigious journal spanning the full spectrum of environmental sciences. Its scope is comprehensive, covering areas such as eco- and environmental toxicology, environmental aspects of public health, regulation, and policy. For those considering submitting papers to ES&T or seeking advice on navigating the publication journey, feel free to reach out to Paul for guidance.

Funding Opportunities

SPH Kickstarter Awards Now Accepting Applications!

The SPH Kickstarter Awards are intended to (i) support faculty research activities to advance the preparation of high‐quality grant or contract applications or (ii) support student-led research.

Activities acceptable under this award (but are not limited to):

  • Faculty: Short methodological or content‐oriented consultative services (e.g., project design, sample size estimates, measure development), technical writing support, data collection or acquisition, preliminary data analysis, focus group costs, start-up or development activities with community partners. Funds can be spent to employ student workers, resources or incentives for community partners, external consultants, or university‐affiliated fee‐for‐service research units or cores. Funds may not be spent on faculty salary.
  • Students: Publication costs or conference attendance (if giving oral or poster presentation). Funds may not be spent on student salary or for work conducted as part of meeting the requirements of their academic program.

PSU Research Pathways (PRP) Program

The PSU Research Pathways (PRP) program supports early-career, tenure-track PSU-based faculty in establishing their research program, leveraging institutional and extramural resources. Connects faculty with resources and mentorship offered in many formats, including individual, small-group, and workshops.
