Emily Boniface, HSP PhD student, Awarded Emerging Scholars in Family Planning
We are thrilled to announce that Emily Boniface, current doctoral candidate in Health Systems & Policy at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, has been awarded an Emerging Scholars in Family Planning grant for $7,500 to investigate the population-level economic effects of post-Dobbs abortion bans.
This highly competitive award seeks to convene a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and multidisciplinary community of all engaged in the science of abortion and contraception. The grant may be used to support a publishable scholarly research project, including those associated with a thesis or dissertation. The goal of the Emerging Scholars in Family Planning grant is to cultivate the next generation of scholars by supporting their work and welcoming them into the family planning research community.
Boniface’s project aims to fill a critical gap in understanding how these abortion bans impact household poverty—especially among communities already facing economic hardship due to historical marginalization, race, ethnicity, or immigration status. Using nationally representative data, Boniface will compare rates of household poverty in states with abortion bans to non-ban states, providing clear, actionable evidence to inform policy, advocacy, and reproductive justice work.
