Graduate Spotlight: Gwyneth Pham

Gwyneth Pham is graduating this year from Portland State University (PSU) with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, with a focus on Community Health and Promotion.

As a first-generation student born to parents who immigrated from Vietnam, Gwyneth navigated much of her educational journey independently. While her family encouraged her success, she often relied on her own initiative and the support of mentors to explore opportunities and shape her career goals.

Throughout her time at PSU, Gwyneth found guidance and encouragement from faculty and staff who helped her grow both academically and personally.

She credits several professors with making a lasting impact on her educational experience, including Dr. Leanne Serbulo from University Studies, and Dr. Betty Izumi.

As Gwyneth’s Freshman and Sophomore Inquiry professor, Dr. Serbulo helped her discover a deeper purpose for pursuing higher education.

“After taking her classes, I realized why I wanted to be in school beyond doing it for my family,” Gwyneth said. “I wanted to learn.”

Through courses with Dr. Izumi, Gwyneth developed a stronger understanding of Asian American health and health disparities, which helped shape her professional goals.

“She taught me so much about Asian American health,” Gwyneth said. “It helped me realize that I want to support Asian American communities and improve health outcomes.”

In addition to faculty support, Gwyneth recognizes the important role that academic advisors and pathway staff played in helping her navigate college. She is especially grateful to Laura Marsh from the Health Science and Earth pathway for her assistance with course registration and support through changes to her academic plans.

“Without her help, I wouldn’t have been able to finish university on time,” Gwyneth said.

She also thanked Ari Douangpanya, director of the Health Science and Earth pathway, for being a consistent source of guidance and encouragement throughout her time at PSU.

As she celebrates this milestone, Gwyneth is grateful for the community of educators, mentors, and supporters who helped her reach graduation. Her experiences at PSU strengthened her commitment to public health and inspired her passion for advancing the health and well-being of Asian American communities.
