REQUIRED TRAINING: Attendance at Academic Coaching training sessions on Tuesday through Thursday, September 15th – 17th, 2026 and Winter Retreat on Saturday, January 30th, 2027.

About the Program

The STAR Program is a new initiative focused on supporting first-year students who are placed on academic warning after their first term at PSU. It aims to offer targeted, proactive academic recovery support—modeled after proven higher education programs—to help students regain good standing through holistic coaching, skill-building, and personalized goal-setting.

Position Summary

This coaching role is central to the pilot and launch of STAR. Working closely with leadership, the Graduate Academic Coach will help design, implement, and deliver all aspects of the academic recovery experience. The role uniquely combines program co-creation, direct student coaching, outreach, and records management—providing both strategic and frontline support to at-risk first-year students.

Coach Responsibilities:

STAR Program Co-Creation (Fall Term)

  • Participate in academic coach training and develop one-on-one coaching skills in student appointments.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and team to co-design STAR’s structure, processes, and support resources.
  • Help define learning outcomes and assessment tools for the pilot.
  • Contribute to workshop content, intake processes, and orientation materials.
  • Participate in pilot planning meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Academic Coaching & Support (Winter & Spring Pilot Terms)

  • Maintain a caseload of STAR students, providing tailored academic coaching sessions focused on self-management, time management, and study strategies.
  • Guide students through the creation of individualized Academic Recovery Plans.
  • Track student progress, maintain accurate records, and document coaching interventions and outcomes.
  • Conduct targeted outreach and follow-up (including emails, phone calls, and drop-in support) to ensure sustained engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Admitted to a Portland State University graduate program relevant to education, counseling, higher education, etc.; continuation contingent on successful
  • completion (B or better) of coursework

  • Desire to work with students, or for a career in student affairs, education, or counseling
  • Willingness to self-reflect and engage in developmental and constructive feedback
  • Must be available to work all hours in-person
  • Presentation and public speaking skills required
  • Attend and actively participate in training sessions (September 15–17, 2026, and Winter Retreat January 3, 2027).
  • Ability to commit to an in-person schedule for all terms.
