Lactation Education Program Information

Live Distance Learning 3-Course Series

These courses offer live weekly distance learning classes and encourage synchronous (live class) participation. They are designed for students who want an interactive and collaborative virtual classroom experience. The three courses are spread over three terms (7 months) and students should plan to spend 8-12 hours weekly on coursework outside of class.

Fall - PHE 418 - Lactation Education 1 - 4 credits

First day of term: Sept 30th, 2024 (on the first day of each term all students are required to visit the course home page to review the syllabus and the readings and assignments on Canvas if they have not yet done so).

This lactation education course is a distance learning course, which includes weekly live distance learning classes held via Zoom. All class times are listed in US Pacific time.

All live weekly distance learning classes will be held on Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm US Pacific time. Weekly attendance during the live distance learning class is highly encouraged. Students will have the opportunity to earn points through participation during the live classes. All classes will be recorded so that students can view the recorded session if they are unable to attend the class that week.

Class dates include:

  • Oct 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th
  • Nov 6th, 13th & 20th
  • No Distance Learning class on Nov 28th
  • Dec 4th & 11th

Winter - PHE 419 - Lactation Education 2 - 4 credits

First day of term: Jan 6th, 2025 (on the first day of each term all students are required to visit the course home page to review the syllabus and the readings and assignments on Canvas if they have not yet done so).

Remote Accelerated 2 – Course Series

These courses are online and asynchronous. Students will view recorded lectures/content while completing weekly assignments and quizzes. There will be some weekly opportunities for interaction with the course instructors and other students, however, that will not be required. 

Students should plan to spend 20-30 hrs per week on coursework. These courses are designed for students who are self-directed learners and those who need a more flexible course schedule. This 2-course series will allow students to complete the required lactation education courses in 4+ months.

Winter - PHE 424 - Lactation Ed I accelerated - 6 credits

First day of term: Jan 6th, 2025 (on the first day of each term all students are required to visit the course home page to review the syllabus and the readings and assignments on Canvas if they have not yet done so).

Live optional distance learning Course Orientation date/time TBD. The live course orientation will be recorded so that students who could not attend the live session can view the recorded session.

Live optional weekly office hours with an instructor will be held. Day/time TBD. Students can attend live or view the recorded session.

Last day of the term: Mar 21st, 2025.

Spring - PHE 425 - Lactation Ed 2 accelerated - 4 credits

First day of term: Mar 31st, 2025 (on the first day of each term all students are required to visit the course home page to review the syllabus and the readings and assignments on Canvas if they have not yet done so).

Optional weekly live office hours with an instructor and other students will be available.

Days/dates/times TBD. – Students will be notified of the date/time so they can attend live or view the recorded session.

Course completion: No later than May 30th, 2025.

Lactation Education Courses in the PSU Lactation Training Program

Our program offers online Lactation Education courses that meet the IBCLC certification requirement for lactation specific education. Students have the option of taking live interactive distance learning courses or taking remote courses that offer recorded lectures with no live classes.
