Biography

Gordon C. Shen is an Associate Professor at the Oregon Health & Science University–Portland State University School of Public Health, where he also serves as Director of the Health Systems and Policy PhD Program. Gordon is an organizational theorist who studies responsible innovations in health. His research examines the cultural, co-creative, and contextual dimensions of innovation, applying organizational theories to mental and global health. His work has appeared in Academy of Management Perspectives, Sociology of Development, Health Systems and Reform, and The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science.

Prior to joining OHSU-PSU SPH, Gordon was an assistant professor in the schools of public health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the City University of New York. Before entering academia, he consulted for the World Health Organization, the World Bank, USAID, and the Global Development Network. He holds a PhD in Health Services and Policy Analysis from the University of California, Berkeley (2013), an SM in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2007), and a BS in Psychobiology and Public Health from UCLA (2005). Gordon was a Fulbright-Fogarty pre- and post-doctoral fellow in China and Ethiopia, respectively.

Experienced Faculty With Diverse Backgrounds

More than 150 faculty members work within the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. They have a wide range of expertise, from monitoring and assessing health risks and opportunities in populations, to helping build health-supporting social environments through policy, advocacy, and programs. They are educators, advisors, researchers, practitioners and community leaders. They come from backgrounds in quantitative, behavioral, environmental and social sciences, policy and government, exercise and health sciences and anthropology, among many other areas. They all work in collaboration with each other and with community partners, and are especially focused on the training and education of future leaders and practitioners in the public health fields.
