Application Deadlines

All application materials, including official transcripts from all schools attended and official GRE scores, must be received in SOPHAS before the posted deadline in order to be reviewed.

**Fall 2020 deadline extended to June 1st**

  • December 1 – Early application deadline and decisions provided by end of January.
  • February 1 – Decisions provided by mid-March.

The MPH in Environmental Systems and Human Health Admissions Committee considers each applicant holistically, on the basis of all components. We encourage all interested applicants to apply. Successful applicants typically demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Strong quantitative ability, assessed based on grades in math or statistics coursework, the GRE quantitative score, or applied experience
  • Strong written communication ability, assessed based on grades in writing or communication coursework, and the Verbal or Analytical Writing GRE scores
  • Hard science coursework, including chemistry, biology, or environmental sciences

Admissions Requirements

  • Conferred Undergraduate Degree from an accredited or governmentally – recognized university
  • One college level math course

Application Requirements

  • A personal statement (approximately 500 words) addressing career goals; professional interests and experiences, and how the program will help you achieve your professional goals.
  • Curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s potential success in this program, and prospects for a career in public health. Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide at least one recommendation letter from an academic source (e.g., former instructor or advisor), who can speak to the applicant’s prior academic performance.
  • Official transcript from all higher education institutions attended. (OHSU and PSU transcripts are also required for current and prior students).
    • Standardized test scores (one of the following)
      • GRE – Taken within the last five years. Send to SOPHAS with code 1045
      • MCAT – Have AAMC send scores to SOPHAS
      • Waiver – Applicants with an earned graduate degree from an accredited or governmentally recognized institution need not provide GRE or MCAT scores. If applicants with a graduate degree are without quantitative coursework in their academic background, they are encouraged to submit GRE scores. 
    • WES ICAP Course-by-Course evaluation of academic records from institutions outside the U.S. and English-speaking Canada.
    • International applicants whose degrees are not from a governmentally-recognized university in Great Britain, English-Speaking Canada, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand must provide official scores on the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System-Academic (IELTS) exam. The scores must be less than two years old at time of matriculation (unless continuous US residency has been maintained since the exam date).
      • TOEFL: Minimum overall internet score of 80 (minimum subscores of 18 in reading and writing) and have ETS send scores to SOPHAS using code 5688
      • IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.5 and upload a copy of your Test Report Form from IELTS in your application. Official scores may also be sent by IELTS directly to OHSU-PSU School of Public Health at 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd, Mail Code GH230, Portland, OR 97239

Background Checks

  • Applicants who accepted an offer to study at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health are required to complete a background check. New students will be prompted to complete the background check information after the new student’s name and email address are provided to the vendor by Admissions.
  • The cost is paid for by the applicant (from $35 and up) and the process can take several days to several weeks to complete. Only the “Approved” or “Not Approved” results are communicated with Admissions; background check details are confidential and remain with the vendor performing this review.
