Once again, the US and Israel are attacking Iran. The Trump administration has advanced several contradictory war objectives, most prominently the destruction of Iran’s capacity to build a nuclear weapon. That objective was supposedly achieved by he previous US-Israeli attack on Iran. In his first term, President Trump unilaterally abrogated the “Iran nuclear deal” (the JCPAO) although according to the stringent inspection regime there was no evidence that Iran was violating that agreement. So what gives? Why did the US and Israel launch a new war on Iran on Feb. 28?

He taught Middle East history at Stanford University, 1983-2006 and 2008-2019 and directed the Middle East Studies Program at the American University in Cairo in 2006-08. In 2001-02 he served as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America. He is a prolific author and popular lecturer.
